AN&MEF at sea on Berrima.jpg

On 19 August 1914, the HMAT Berrima steamed out of Sydney Harbour bound for Rabaul in German Neu Guinea tasked with disrupting the activities of the German Pacific Fleet by destroying their radio network across the Pacific Islands.  Aboard the Berrima were 46 Officers and 1038 other rank members of the military component of the Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force.

The main purposes of this site are:

  • To identify each of those military members for the AN&MEF and tell the story of their military career.

  • Create a greater community awareness of this force and its importance in Australia’s military history as well as its importance in the development of our ties with Papua New Guinea.

  • Invite those who have a relationship with any of these men to add to the story of their involvement in this Force, subsequent military service and ongoing relationships with Papua New Guinea.
